SAT-1 Terminal Soft Opening
On September 28, 2023, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok will have its soft opening of the first Midfield Satellite Building, also known as SAT-1. This new terminal will significantly increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 45 million to 60 million per year. The SAT-1 terminal is a crucial part of the airport’s phase-two development, aimed at accommodating the growing number of passengers and air traffic.
Media Preview of the Terminal
Prior to the official opening, a media preview event was held to showcase the operation readiness of the new terminal. Led by Mr. Kittipong Kittikachorn, the Suvarnabhumi Airport General Manager, the preview allowed 200 representatives from television stations, newspapers, online media, and social media platforms to experience the outbound and inbound international passenger routes. The media tour used the Automated People Mover (APM), an unmanned electric vehicle, to transport the participants between the main terminal and SAT-1.
Full-Scale Trial Operations
To ensure the readiness of the SAT-1 terminal for the soft opening, three trial operations were conducted. These trials involved collaborations with airlines, ground service providers, and related agencies. By simulating real passenger operations, these trials helped identify and address any potential issues and ensure a smooth and efficient operation on September 28.
Systems Operational Readiness Test
Before the soft opening, a systems operational readiness test was conducted to assess various services and systems within the SAT-1 terminal. These tests ensured compliance with international standards and included safety inspections by regulatory bodies. The terminal’s apron area, connecting taxiway, service roads, building infrastructure, utilities, Automated People Mover (APM), and baggage handling systems were thoroughly evaluated to guarantee their readiness and efficiency.
Features of SAT-1 Terminal
The SAT-1 terminal spans a total indoor usable area of 251,400 square meters and has a substantial apron area of over 260,000 square meters. The terminal is a four-storey building with two basements, each level serving different functions. The B2 level houses the APM Station, while the B1 level hosts the systems control room. The G level is dedicated to the Baggage Handling System (BHS) and offices. The second floor is designed for arrival passengers and those with flight connections, while the third floor serves as the departure area. The fourth level is reserved for passenger lounges, airline lounges, and other facilities. The terminal is connected to the main terminal via an underground tunnel that runs for approximately one kilometer. Inside the tunnel, the APM, BHS, and two airside service roads operate to facilitate seamless passenger transfers.
Automated People Mover (APM)
The APM is an unmanned electric vehicle specifically designed for passenger transportation within the SAT-1 terminal. It is available for international flights and offers a convenient and efficient means of travel. The APM’s capacity allows it to accommodate up to 210 passengers per train per way, and the journey time, including waiting time at the station, is approximately three minutes.
Interior Design and Themes
The SAT-1 terminal showcases the Thai identity and culture through its interior design. The design elements aim to harmonize with the modern building structures while reflecting the country’s rich artistic heritage. One prominent feature is the pair of metallic Himmapan elephants situated in the middle of the departure hall on the third floor. These majestic sculptures symbolize Thai artistic excellence. Additionally, the third floor features a garden theme adorned with mythical Himmapan creatures, such as Kinnanorn, Kinnaree, Hemaraj, and Hongsa, which represent ancient Thai beliefs. The terminal’s interior incorporates various Thai arts and cultural elements, including mini puppet theatres, grand shadow play, Khon masks, and Thai kites.
Gilded Wood and Glass Busabok
The departure hall of the SAT-1 terminal is highlighted by the gilded wood and glass Busabok. These artistic thrones house the Buddha images of Phra Phutthapatima in the Poet-lok and Mara Wichai postures. The Busabok serves as a central feature, adding a touch of cultural significance to the terminal’s design.
Arrival Area Design and Features
The arrival area of the SAT-1 terminal offers a unique experience for passengers with its garden-themed walk. This walk aims to showcase Thai arts and culture, providing a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for passengers arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The walk incorporates various elements, including landscape displays, mini puppet theatres, grand shadow play, Khon masks, Thai kites, and more. Another notable aspect of the terminal’s design is the distinctive design of the toilets, which represent the cultural traditions and features of Thailand’s four regions. These toilets not only showcase the country’s diversity but also feature water-saving automation.
Flights and Services
During the initial period, Thai AirAsia X and Thai Vietjet will be the primary operators at the SAT-1 terminal. Thai AirAsia X will operate 14 flights per day, while Thai Vietjet will have four daily flights. The SAT-1 terminal will partially open duty-free shops, lounges, and other facilities to cater to passengers. This ensures that passengers have access to essential services and amenities during their travel experience.
